The name 1:network seems a bit strange at first glance. It is pronounced one to network. This is a cooperation network in which several companies are involved. This includes the meter manufacturer EMH metering, Netze BW, Stadtwerke Karlsruhe Netzservice and Stromnetz Hamburg. The actual goal of this cooperation is to optimize the 1:network radio standard so that it can be ready for the market in the foreseeable future. However, it should be clarified which possibilities this new standard offers and why it is so important.

EMH metering entered into the cooperation with the other three participants because there is a lot of pent-up demand. Connecting electricity meters to a smart meter gateway with a new radio standard offers great advantages for the energy industry. Meter operators in particular benefit from not having to connect each electricity meter to a separate cable. In larger systems, difficulties already arise during installation because the existing control cabinets do not offer enough space.
However, if several meters can communicate via a secure radio standard, the previously known problems no longer exist. This creates advantages for the energy supplier and, of course, for the meter operator. But the end user also benefits, because installation is no longer so complex. Usually, there has to be a gateway for each meter because data acquisition is cable-based. With the newly developed 1:network from EMH metering, several meters can share one gateway.
Cutting costs with the new 1:network wireless standard
For all parties involved, it is first and foremost the costs that matter. Since the installation alone can be carried out much more simply and thus more cost-effectively, savings occur for the building owner and for the metering point operator. This is particularly important in today’s world, where everyone has to watch what they spend. If technical facilities can be combined and thus simplified, the people involved are very pleased.
Pay attention to installation obligations
Anyone who reaches an annual consumption of more than 6,000 kW/h must definitely have a smart meter installed. With this, the individual consumers can be classified quite well. But also the periods in which the highest energy consumption takes place can be determined. For the end user, however, this installation obligation is not necessarily an advantage, because it results in additional costs of an average of 100 euros per year for the modern technology.
However, costs can be saved with the new 1:network technology. In addition, the evaluations can be used to consume less energy in the long term. However, the operators of EMH metering are convinced that many customers will decide to use this technology, even if they are not yet obliged to do so.
If there is accurate information about when and with which devices the most energy is consumed, energy savings can be achieved in time. Since the new 1:network radio standard for smart meters and gateways can also be retrofitted at any time, this technology offers numerous advantages to almost every electricity customer.
