ABB and Samsung Electronics: New technologies for less energy consumption
ABB and Samsung Electronics announced their new partnership in April 2022. They had come together to implement new ideas for saving energy worldwide, especially in residential buildings. This takes into account that buildings account for around 40 percent of the total CO2 emissions generated in the world.
The partnership between the two companies is now intended to promote innovations that can be used to intelligently control residential buildings as well as energy consumers. This brings us a step closer to the goal of smart buildings that are completely self-sufficient. What is important in the implementation of the idea is optimal device management as well as the shifting of loads in buildings.
Intelligent devices in use
The partnership between ABB and Samsung Electronics should make it possible to control numerous household appliances via the IoT. Energy and security systems, gas and smoke detectors will also be controlled through just one app.
This makes it easier for consumers to use the devices and at the same time helps to save energy. In addition, it should be possible to use so-called off-peak times. Washing machines and dishwashers will then no longer run during the day, but at night, when the other electricity consumers are only operating at low levels and cheaper electricity is available.
Company spokespeople expect that their customers will eventually have access to a holistic smart-building system and that this will enable them to save significantly more energy and CO2. If consumption is directly matched to demand, it should be possible to significantly reduce the amount of energy required, they reason.
Extensions planned
Samsung Electronics and ABB plan for buildings to be interconnected without having to operate through a specific platform. An open solution is the goal. At the same time, the companies have electromobility in mind and also want to enable charging of e-vehicles via their solutions.
Extensions to various systems in single- and multi-family homes as well as in functional buildings are also planned. At the same time, construction companies and architects or building planners will be able to obtain everything from a single source, so that the digital connection of all buildings will be significantly simplified. It will also be possible to retrofit existing buildings.
