HHLA’s Container Terminal Altenwerder to Receive Funding for 5G Campus Network

0

The Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has been selected to receive funding under the “DigiTest” directive by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) for the establishment of a 5G campus network. The project aims to create a digital testbed on the terminal premises to explore new use cases and further enhance logistics process efficiency.

Private 5G Network Enhances Communication Infrastructure for Port Logistics

The establishment of a private 5G mobile network within the PROCON-5G project at the CTA premises creates a reliable and flexible communication infrastructure for port logistics. This network offers high performance and reliability, enabling real-time data transmission with fast response times and high bandwidths, surpassing previous technologies. As a result, the digitized processes at the terminal can be further optimized, while the communication resilience is enhanced through the implementation of an independent network.

PROCON-5G project receives ?2.3 million funding for 5G network development

The PROCON-5G project, which is funded with approximately 2.3 million euros and runs until mid-2026, aims to gradually build a network that will be used to test various application scenarios. One of the key focuses is exploring how the 5G network can support further automation of devices and mobile maintenance. The insights gained from these tests will not only drive the development of CTA but also benefit other companies in the port logistics industry.

Michael Albers, project leader at HHLA, emphasizes the significance of the 5G network in driving digitalization and automation at the Altenwerder Container Terminal. By opening up the CTA as a test field for 5G innovations, Albers is excited to provide other companies with the opportunity to explore and experiment with this groundbreaking technology.

PROCON-5G: One of Many Projects Advancing Digital Test Fields in Ports

The PROCON-5G project is part of a larger initiative called “Digital Test Fields in Ports,” which aims to support the development of digital infrastructure in German seaports and inland ports for testing innovative technologies. This project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, highlights the government’s commitment to fostering innovation in the maritime industry. With the TÜV Rheinland as the project organizer, it ensures that the necessary equipment and resources are provided for successful experimentation and evaluation of new solutions.

5G Campus Network at Altenwerder Terminal Enhances Port Logistics

The establishment of a 5G campus network at the Container Terminal Altenwerder brings numerous benefits to the port logistics industry. With a powerful and reliable communication infrastructure, the digitalized processes at the terminal can be further optimized. The 5G network enables fast response times and high bandwidth for real-time data transfers. Additionally, the construction of an independent network enhances communication resilience. The PROCON-5G project represents a significant step towards the digitalization and automation of operations at the Container Terminal Altenwerder, while also providing other companies with the opportunity to test the advantages of this groundbreaking technology.
