PFISTERER Holding SE has developed a groundbreaking world first with its new repair sleeve for high-voltage submarine cables up to 170 kV. This innovative solution allows for the connection of various types of high-voltage three-phase submarine cables using a plug-in principle, regardless of their structure or manufacturer. As a result, faulty submarine cables can be efficiently repaired and the inventory of spare parts significantly reduced. This breakthrough once again confirms PFISTERER’s role as a trailblazer in energy transmission.

The innovative repair solution is based on the plug-in epoxy resin sleeve up to 170 kV from PFISTERER’s CONNEX product family. This technology is already successfully used on numerous offshore wind and oil platforms to connect platform cables with export cables. The housing of the sleeve, developed by the British engineering company Power CSL, is particularly robust and completely watertight and submersible. Thanks to the plug-in principle, the universal repair sleeve can be mounted on any plastic-insulated HVAC cable up to 170 kV. All three phases in the cable are connected in parallel to a centrally prefabricated unit in one plug-in process. This saves valuable assembly time at sea and significantly reduces the number of required spare parts.
TenneT commissions PFISTERER to develop innovative universal repair sleeve
The development of the innovative universal sleeve was commissioned by TenneT, a leading European network operator based in Germany and the Netherlands. TenneT operates offshore grid connection systems in the North Sea to bring wind power from offshore to onshore. Previously, reserve cables, repair sleeves, and spare parts had to be kept for each specific connection. With PFISTERER’s universal repair sleeve, TenneT can significantly reduce the need for spare parts, saving on logistic capacity, time, and costs.
PFISTERER introduces new repair sleeve for high-voltage submarine cables
PFISTERER’s range of repair sleeves for high-voltage subsea cables now includes a new pull-on variant for cables up to 245 kV. This innovative solution utilizes the same mechanical components as the 170 kV version, allowing for the connection of cables with varying conductor cross-sections and geometries. With this pull-on repair sleeve, PFISTERER offers an efficient and versatile option for repairing and connecting high-voltage subsea cables, further solidifying their position as a leader in the energy transmission industry.
